About

Initiated in 2020, the Department of Geology is actively involved in teaching and research in the field of Geology. Over the past decade the Department has strived to maintain its multidisciplinary approach towards Earth Sciences by applying the concepts of Geology to solve scientific problems faced by the society. The Department maintains ties with well-known organizations such as the Geological Survey of India, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, National Geophysical Research Institute, Central Ground Water Board, ISRO, UNESCO, BSIP, PRL, CESS, the Directorate of Geology and Mining, other universities research institutions.

Vision The Geology Department of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez seeks to provide the highest levels of education through continuous revision and expansion of our educational, research, and outreach programs in order to produce well-trained, competent, academic and professional geoscientists capable of responding to societal needs.

Mission

• Prepare students for professional positions in industry and government and for careers in academic research and teaching.


• Increase awareness of Earth and Environmental Sciences in liberal arts, education, and other science majors.


• Educate engineers in the geological concepts integral to competent engineering practices.


• Establish the Department of Geology as the center for research in Caribbean Earth and Environmental Sciences.
